This plan has been funded in part by the Climate Smart Communities Grant Program, Title 15 of the Environmental Protection Fund through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Overview

Monroe County Department of Environmental Services is currently in the process of developing an Organics Management Plan (OMP) to complement its existing Local Solid Waste Management Plan. The primary goal of the OMP is to reduce and divert organic waste from disposal, while supporting the county's existing goals for recycling, waste reduction, and reuse. Furthermore, as a certified Climate Smart Community, Monroe County aims to further its efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This is in line with its Climate Action Plan (CAP).

Vision and Goals

The OMP will involve several initiatives, including

  • Characterizing and quantifying the organic waste generated in the County.
  • Developing a comprehensive account of existing programs and facilities available for managing organic waste.
  • Engaging the community and relevant stakeholders.
  • Developing cost-effective strategies for reducing and diverting organic waste, identifying financial frameworks for implementing these strategies, and analyzing GHG reductions for each proposed strategy.
  • Developing a timeline for implementation.
  • Establishing goals to measure the success of these strategies.
  • Quantifying GHG emissions reductions.
